Saturday Presentation:  "Becoming a
Better Birder -- enhancing your skill and enjoyment"
- Hone your birding skills and enjoyment with tips on buying and using binoculars, locating good habitat to find birds and improving your observation techniques. Dr. Eldon Greij (pronounced, "Gray"), noted Hope College biologist/ornithologist and founder of "Birders World" magazine, will help you increase the joy experienced in the wonderful hobby of birding.

 

Saturday Presentation:  "Exciting and Intriguing Bird Courtship" - Bird courtship in the wild is never dull and is usually very fascinating. Dr. Greij will entertain you as he details the highly stylized rituals and many of the unique breeding antics of the bird world. Discover "How" and "Why" birds bill and coo.

 

Dr. Eldon Greij

Eldon Greij is a native of North Dakota and now lives in Michigan. He studied biology, specializing in ecology and ornithology, and received a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1969. Eldon has a special interest in marshes and studied Common Moorhens for twelve years. He was a member of the Hope College Biology Department from 1962 to 1988, when he left to launch Birder's World magazine. He sold the magazine in 1995, continued to serve as editor through October, 1998, and continues to write for them. Currently semi-retired, he remains active as a writer, speaker, and tour leader. Eldon offers a course for birdwatchers entitled, "An Appreciation of Birds," that is usual1y held on a three-day weekend. His favorite tours include the Peruvian Amazon, Tanzania, and Panama.
