Presentations:

"Michigan Butterflies and Moths"
&
"Michigan Snakes"

Presentation:  "Michigan Butterflies and Moths" - Did you know there are 10 times more moth species than butterflies? Can you tell the difference between a moth and a butterfly?

Attend “Michigan Butterflies and Moths” and you'll be able to tell at a glance. And you'll learn about the more common butterflies and moths – where they live, how to find them, what host plants their caterpillars eat, how they spend the winter, as well as lots of other fun and interesting bio-facts.

Presentation:  "Michigan Snakes" - Seeing live native Michigan snakes up close and personal, festival-goers will have the chance to learn many interesting facts about the snakes’ biology and ecology, and individual species' habits and traits, and hopefully dispel many of the fears and misconceptions of this fascinating group of animals.

At the end of the presentation, eager participants will have the opportunity to see up close, maybe even handle, some of the snakes.

Program Presented by: Jim and Carol McGrath

Jim McGrath, the founder of Nature Discovery, has a degree in Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University and has over 16 years experience as an interpretive naturalist. He is employed by the Michigan DNR, Lansing Community College, as well as both public and private schools. He is also a regular natural-science teacher at area Montessori schools. Jim runs a very popular summer day camp program and conducts numerous interpretive walks, field trips and eco-tours throughout the year. A strong lifelong interest in the natural world, coupled with an enthusiasm to share knowledge with others, is key to Jim’s popularity with students of all ages.

Carol McGrath has a degree in Biology from the University of Illinois. After working several years as a chemist in the private sector, she has turned teacher and assists her husband Jim with wildlife education in addition to other aspects of science education. Carol is currently contracted by Fairfield Elementary School in Lansing as their specialist science teacher as well as teaching chemistry and physical science at the Montessori Center. Her detailed knowledge and hand-on approach are consistent with the Michigan Essential Goals and Objectives for Science Education. Carol’s love of science is infectious to students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
