2004 FRIDAY WORKSHOP WITH
Dr. Jim Davis

"Becoming a Better Naturalist through Interpretive Birding"

Dr. Jim Davis

Over the past five years, Dr. Jim Davis has shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of bird behavior by conducting unique workshops on interpretive birding. Workshops are aimed at helping others "see" birds and nature with a more acute and curious eye. He has conducted workshops at many Audubon groups, naturalist conventions, and birding festivals.

Dr. Davis takes great pride in helping people view nature and wildlife in a different light. He contends that closer involvement with birds and the natural world is what is required to turn the tide in favor of sustainable conservation policies and practices.

Jim has studied birds for 20 years and in the past 15 years traveled the world to expand his observations and share his experiences through his writings. He started and is the publisher of the Interpretive Birding Bulletin, a bi-monthly international science magazine on bird behavior written for birders.

Dr. Jim Davis has been invited to the 2004 KW Festival to conduct one of his stimulating workshops on interpreting bird behavior. Participants will learn how to identify specific behaviors, how to profile those behaviors, as well as interpreting the meaning of different bird songs.  In a nut shell, he helps birders become better naturalists.

The workshop is being held on Friday, May 14, at the Kirtland Community College conference center from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost is $45 per person including lunch. The morning is a lecture and discussion on interpretive birding skills, the afternoon a birding field trip to practice techniques discussed in the classroom. Jim will also give two presentations at the Festival on Saturday, May 15.

A comment he often hears after his lectures and workshops: "You have changed how I view nature and how I do my bird watching. Thank you for making birding much more enjoyable for me." For more information, visit www.ibirding.com.

Dr. Jim Davis has studied bird behavior for twenty years. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to do a post-doc at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. His scientific contributions have focused on various aspects of kingfisher behavior including territoriality, vocal communication, and mating systems. Over the past 15 years, Jim has traveled to different parts of the world to observe and write about bird behavior. In 1997, he started the Australian edition of Interpretive Birding Bulletin and, in 2000, the North American edition.
