– A hands-on birding workshop featuring Michigan IBA coordinator
and ornithologist Caleb Putnam.
Dr. Eldon Greij
"The Marvels and Mechanics of Avian Flight"
Dr. Eldon Greij, former professor and founder of “Birder’s
World” magazine, will lead festival-goers through the beauty and
fascinating adaptations of bird flight and migration using
beautiful illustrations, magazine-quality photographs and his
many years studying bird life.

"The Kirtland's Warbler Winter Research and Training Project"
Much is known about the summer ecology of the Kirtland's warbler
and how best to maintain its special habitat – and its survival
– here in northern Michigan. Very little, however, has been
known about its habitat and life requirements on its wintering
grounds in the Bahamas.
Jim Harding
"Creatures of the Shadows, Michigan’s Salamanders and Lizards"
Due to their secretive nature, Michigan's 10 species of
salamanders – and two species of look-alike, but unrelated
lizards – are often overlooked and unappreciated even by many
"nature-loving" folks.
Warbler Recovery Team members
"Warbler's World"This is the story of the Kirtland's warbler and
its comeback from the brink of extinction.
Jim and Carol McGrath of Nature Discovery
"Michigan Butterflies and Moths"
Did you know there are 10 times more moth species than
butterflies? Can you tell the difference between a moth and a
butterfly?
Jim and Carol McGrath of Nature Discovery
"Michigan Snakes"
Seeing live native Michigan snakes up close and personal,
festival-goers will have the chance to learn many interesting
facts about the snakes’ biology and ecology, and individual
species' habits and traits, and hopefully dispel many of the
fears and misconceptions of this fascinating group of animals.
Al Batt
"This-N-That Bio Chat"
Back by popular demand, Al Batt, a Minnesota naturalist and
author, is this year's featured presenter.
Jerry Weinrich
"Michigan Eagle 'Overview'"
Using his decades of experience "flying with the eagles,"
surveying their nests by airplane, retired DNR wildlife
biologist Jerry Weinrich will take festival-goers soaring over
Michigan, as he describes this magnificent bird's comeback in
northern Michigan.
