Michigan Wood Turtles
presented by Alix Silvis
Wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) are a semi-aquatic species of pond turtle that ranges as far east as Nova Scotia, as far west as Minnesota, as far north as Quebec and as far south as Virginia. While population decline is a serious issue for the wood turtle across its range, a stable population in Michigan has provided insight into the effects that environmental factors have on wood turtle activity, as well as long-term data on home range size and site fidelity. This discussion will review past and present research on wood turtles in Michigan, and highlight the general ecology of the species.
