CAMP ELDORADO TOUR

Not far from Kirtland Community College’s main campus near Roscommon are the remnants of Camp Eldorado, a former Civilian Conservation Corps site.
More than a quarter of a century ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the CCC, the most popular of the New Deal programs created to provide relief and speed recovery from the Great Depression. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC put some two million young men to work on a massive program in America's parks and forests.
In the summer of 1933, the first CCC camps opened in Michigan. Planting trees, building firebreaks, fighting wildfires and construction of campgrounds were the primary areas of work.
In June 1936, Camp Eldorado, located 11 miles north of Roscommon on national forest system lands, was occupied by Company 3685.
